INTERNATIONAL DAY FORTHE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN, 2020
Wednesday, November 25, 2020 - 11.20
SMK MUTU TUBABA - International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. This date was chosen as a tribute to the death of the Mirabal sisters (Patria, Minerva & Maria Teresa) on the same date in 1960 as a result of the heinous murder committed by an accomplice to the then dictator of the Dominican Republic, namely Rafael Trujillo. The Mirabal sisters were political activists who constantly fought for democracy and justice, and became a symbol of resistance to the dictatorship of the Dominican Republic at that time.
Many times they came under pressure and persecution from the authorities which ended in these heinous killings. This date also marks the existence and recognition of gender-based violence.
This date was declared for the first time as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women in 1981 at the first Latin American Women's Congress.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia itself, the National Commission on Violence against Women or Komnas Perempuan is an independent state institution in Indonesia that was formed as a national mechanism to eliminate violence against women. Komnas Perempuan was established on 15 October 1998 based on Presidential Decree No. 181/1998 which was updated by Perpres no. 65 and 66 of 2005. Komnas Perempuan is one of 3 national human rights institutions. 2 Other national human rights institutions are Komnas HAM and the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI).
Komnas Perempuan was born from the demands of civil society, especially women, to the government to realize the state's responsibility in responding to and dealing with problems of violence against women. These demands are rooted in the tragedy of sexual violence that was experienced especially by ethnic Chinese women in the May 1998 riots in various major cities in Indonesia.
STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN!
